Demand water heaters or ‘instant' water heaters as they called, in this day and age of ‘instant coffee ‘, on the other hand use less energy. Water is circulated over a heated coil only on demand. The concept of a storage tank continuously heating water and spending energy is eliminated. The downside to this technology is that there are only a fixed number of users that can avail of the hot water. However, the quantity of hot water is endless, continuous and no ‘standby losses' are incurred.

Solar water heaters are by far the most cost effective among heaters. Though the initial purchase price is high, the cost is leveraged in the long run. Utilising the sun's energy, it brings operating costs down by 90 percent. Conventional water heaters or electric water heaters are installed as a backup for solar waters to ensure there is no lack of supply of hot water on cloudy days.
