But before you head out and splurge on a huge 85 gallon water heater here are a few suggestions to making sure you get the water heater you actually need--and can afford.

Water Heater Tip No.1: Go Small

If you live by yourself, or don't have a ton of other hot water needs-such as a 40 foot Jacuzzi-and have not much square footage, then a model with a 20-30 gallon tank size should meet your needs.

Note: If you plan on having a special someone, or family member, move in, you might want a larger heater to accommodate you.

Water Heater Tip No.2: Couples Only

For couples, you'll want to look at water heaters with tanks between 30-50 gallons. A great solution here is the Rheem MR40245 Marathon water heater with its extra large tank and 4500-watt element size.

One thing to look at here is 1st hour factors. (How long does it take to heat up water.) With something over 40, you'll be sure you have plenty of warm water when you need it.

Water Heater Tip No.3: It's a Family Affair

If you plan on having a children you'll need something bigger. A good yardsick is: if you've got 3-4 people living together you want to have a water heater with a 50-85 gallon size.

Now these models can be a bit spendy--the 85 gallon models can run over a grand. But you'll be shocked by how much money you can save in the long run, both in terms of water bills and stress relief in the family.
