Don't Overlook Your Hot Water Heater

You do not think much about the hot water heater when we are taking a hot shower or using water for any other reason. You only become aware that it is an important appliance in your home when you are forced to take a cold shower. When that happens, it might be time to change your water heater.

Most of us do not pay too much attention when it comes to selecting a new heater; we just tend to go out and pick one at random and have the technician install it. We do not think about having the old heater checked for repairs to get it back to normal functioning. Taking a few smart steps can actually lead to good savings. Plus you would not have to worry about the hassles that go with new installations.

Soon as you have a non-functioning water heater, the first thing you should do is check whether you can fix it yourself. If it is an electric one, check the power supply. The power cord might be eroded or the heater might not be getting the necessary power supply. Most instant heaters are electric heaters and majority of the issues in such devices are on account of some malfunction in the power supply system.

If however, you do not find any problems with the electric supply or if your heater is not an electric one, it might be time to call in a repair technician. Ask him to prepare a repair estimate. New heaters cost between $500 and $600. If your heater is still under warranty, you might actually just have to pay labor charges for repairing it, which could be as little as $50 or $100. In such cases, you might be better off just getting the device repaired.

If your heater is out of warranty you might end up paying $100 just towards the technician's visit. The actual cost of repairing it might be much higher. If the malfunctioning part is a small one, such as an inlet or outlet valve, you can get your hot water heater back to normal functioning at a cost of less than $150. In that case, replacing the entire appliance would not make sense.

Other than for minor malfunctions, the decision to repair or replace the heater should be based on certain specific factors. For example, if you have an electric heater that is burning a hole in your pocket through electricity bills, it might be time to consider installing a propane heater. A malfunction in your existing heater might provide you the reason to replace it.

As your heater ages, its first-hour rating (FHR), which indicates its capacity to deliver hot water in the first hour of use, tends to go down. If your heater has been giving you decreased performance, you should start considering getting a new appliance. This decision should of course be based on your assessment of how much hot water you and your family require during the busiest hour of your day. If your present heater is unable to meet these requirements through FHR, go for a new one.

It is also advisable to think about a replacement if your heater develops a malfunction after it has run out of warranty. Not only will the new heater come with an extended new warranty but you will also save a good deal in terms of repair costs if you keep the existing heater.
