Water Heaters: Tank vs. Tankless

If you have been wondering for a long time about how practical water heaters that use tank are, you must be aware of how big are their power consumption and the space that they use.  People who are conscious about this before realized that the need for tankless type of water heaters arises.  However, there are still some people who are not used to the new technology and choose to use the traditional water heaters.  Unknowingly, these on demand water heaters are the answers to their problems.

Basically, the concept about these heaters is conceptualized from hot water on demand only.  There are a lot of types and they require using different forms of energy sources to be able to heat water, it can either be electric or gas.  Since these heaters do not use tank, the water is heated up only when it is needed.  The main component is a heat exchanger that is turned one every time you use the faucet or shower.  There is a switch that activates the flow and can sense it if the water passes through the pipeline.  Usually, there are two kinds of heat exchangers, there is a burner that uses gas and the other one is electric coils.  Those that are gas-fired can heat water faster and more efficient.

On demand water heaters have several sizes and they depend on certain things.  These include the amount of water that must be heated in a minute, the temperature of water when it goes inside the heater and the preferred temperature that you want from the outlet.  In tankless heaters, water is heated on demand where as in water tank heaters water is gathered at the preferred temperature using the thermostat.  Hence, the first amount of water that goes out as soon as you turned it on is not yet hot.  Because of this, you will be able to waste water before it becomes hot.  There are two types of tankless systems that you can choose from.  You can have the single point, which is usually smaller is used to give hot water from a single point like a shower.  Since it is installed near the water outlet, a single point heater normally has lesser lat time to heat the water.  This means less water is put to waste.  Fire exchangers that use electricity work well with this kind of heater because it is only used to give hot water at a single point.  Hence, most homeowners prefer to use this kind of system because aside from using less electricity, it is compact and occupies small space.

Alternatively, multi point water heater is a system that can heat more amount of water per minute and can supply hot water to several points all at the same time.  Because they need more energy to heat large amounts of water, they normally use gas.  As for big houses, you will surely need more than a single water heating system.  Usually showers need another multi-point water heater since they need more heat.  Because of their additional features, multi point water heater is a bit costly compared to single point water heater.
